West Aurora junior Emma Spagnola led area 3A competitors by qualifying for Saturday’s finals in three individual events. She’s ranked first among 12 finalists in the long jump (18-9.25), second of nine in the 100-meter high hurdles (14.55) and fourth of nine in the 300 hurdles (44.02).

Girls Track: West Aurora’s Spagnola swings for the fences
West Aurora junior Emma Spagnola is verbally committed to Northern Illinois University for softball, but Saturday in Charleston, she made a statement that track doesn’t take a backseat. Spagnola personally accounted for 26 team points in by winning the long jump (18-9) and setting personal records in finishing second in both the 100 high hurdles and 300 low hurdles.

Waubonsee Community College head coach Dave Randall took a trip to the mound for a discussion with freshman pitcher Angel Sanchez, who had been called for a balk then hit a batter, in the second inning. The Chiefs then retired the next 22 batters in an 8-1 victory over Harper to even up the best-of-three series.

Girls Track: Plano’s Jackson has right reaction in prelims
Plano sprinter Zhate Jackson won her heat in 56.87 seconds in the 400 meters at Friday’s preliminaries at the Class 2A State Track Finals. That was an impressive 2.81 seconds better than her state qualifying time at sectional of 59.68. Jackson also qualified for Saturday’s finals in the 200.
